I won't know if it will fix your freezing problem until you try it. I may have fixed it. Not at home, so I'll check later for sure. If you only have one memory stick this method will not work.

At least a DVD drive would be easily (and cheaply) replaceable! The ticking sounds like its probly the hard drive going bad or was originally bad.
